Though it can be a challenge to give up meat in favor of a veggie-based lifestyle, your tastebuds don’t have to suffer in the process. When those meat cravings hit, finding satisfying alternative is an absolute must.
But what do you do when all you want is a juicy cheeseburger? Simple. You go and find a veggie burger that doesn’t taste like complete garbage. But where should you start? We asked the veggie-loving staffers of Mashable for their go-to meat-free picks. Here’s what they recommend:
These veggies burgers are solid choice because of their incredible likeness to real burgers. Made primarily from wheat and potato proteins, and coconut oil to mimic beef fat, this tasty burger is the likeliest to convert a devoted meat-lover.
To put it simply, as one staffer did: “Impossible Burgers are good.” End of story.
“I’m very fond of Shake Shack’s mushroom burger,” one staffer shared.
For those of you with access to the beloved food chain, you should know that the ‘Shroom Burger is absolutely delicious. The patty is made entirely of deep-fried portobello mushrooms with cheese stuffed inside. Topped with lettuce, tomato, and special sauce, this cheesy veggie burger is an excellent alternative to the classic Shack Burger.
This totally vegan burger is a solid option if you find yourself at a Bareburger. The plant-y patty is made of quinoa, chia, and green peas and is accompanied by vegan cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, baby spinach, and something called “7-Spice Thai Ketchup,” all sandwiched between a sprout bun. One staffer gave it high marks.
The crème de la crème of black bean burgers, the Guadalupe is just as holy as the biblical figure it’s named after. The patty is made from black bean, roasted corn, and poblano pepper, and is served with guacamole, pickled red onions, tomatoes, and alfalfa inside a sprout bun. It’s yet another great option at Bareburger.
“It’s one of the better non-meat patties I’ve had,” one staffer told me.
With so many Burger King locations out there, this is one of the more accessible burgers on this list. The “meat” is a MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patty which includes wheat, soy, and mushrooms, plus water chestnuts, onions, carrots, and red bell peppers. This veggie burger comes with pickles, onions, tomatoes, ketchup and mayo on BK’s signature toasted sesame bun.
As one staffer put it, “It’s MorningStar, but it has a BK taste.”
Like the Impossible Burger, Beyond Meat does its best to mimic the look and feel of real beef. How do they do it? According to its website, the patties are made from pea protein and includes beets, which give it that raw meat look.
One caveat: The staffer who recommended Beyond Meat advises against grilling for best flavor and instead recommends cooking patties in the oven.
Hilary’s World’s Best Veggie Burger is a millet and quinoa burger, and according to a taste test done by Thrillist, this burger doesn’t crumble when you cook it. The patty also contains greens, onions and sweet potatoes.
While the staffer who recommended it favors Beyond Burger, she says this one’s her back-up “in a pinch.”
“Hi-Protein” is an understatement for these veggie burgers. With a solid 26 grams of protein packed in a patty made from yellow peas and black beans, the Trader Joe’s Hi Protein Veggie Burger is a great substitute for an actual beef patty.
To quote one extra enthusiastic staffer: “These are BOMB, extra delish as a salad topper.”
This quinoa, black bean, and roasted corn veggie burger features red peppers, chili powder, black pepper, chipotle powder, and other spices and seasonings give it an extra kick. The staffer who recommended this burger says it’s super flavorful.
